Mater Campus Hospital Development
The HSE has given approval to MCHD Ltd to commence preparation of the construction tender for the Mater Campus Hospital Development, a project that involves the rebuilding of key parts of Mater Misericordiae University Hospital. This development will go a long way to addressing the need for modern buildings and equipment for existing services at the Mater and will provide significant additional capacity to service growing patient needs. New facilities to be provided by the development will include:
- New accident and emergency department, double in size
- New outpatients department, double in size
- 12 new theatres and ICU/HDU departments
- New radiology department
- A new 300 space carpark
Key benefits of the development include creating:
- Sufficient capacity to meet demand, meaning reduced waiting times for theatre, outpatients and accident and emergency services
- Increase in single rooms and smaller wards, helping the prevention of spread of infection
- Appropriately sized departments and waiting areas, meaning privacy, dignity and comfort
- Correct departmental adjacencies and signage, meaning clear way finding through the hospitals
- Use of natural light, art and green spaces, improving physical environment and atmosphere
- Increase in outpatient and day procedure capacity in the old Mater Hospital, meaning patients can access the service on a day basis
- Improvement in all facilities, reducing stress and creating opportunities for efficiencies
- “Intelligent” Hospital and “Green” Hospital design creating efficiencies in service delivery
- Contribution to the urban renewal of the North Inner City
- Consolidation of a major hospital district creating a vibrant economic engine for North Inner City
- Improved Mobility Management to include Metro stop.
Programme
- Enabling Buildings, including Hostel and Centre for Nurse Education, were completed in December 2006
- Demolition of the old Nurses Home 2007
- Planning Permission to decouple the Adult Hospital from the previously planned Mater and Children's Hospital development July 2007
- EU notice September 2007 with a view to appoint main contractor Spring 2008
- Main works complete 2010
